The Best 10 of 2000 in Comedy

O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000) 88/100

A glorious, goofy, giddy, inane, outrageous mess of a movie. The Coen brothers’ film is a loose adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, set in the Depression-era U.S. south and following the fate of three escaped cons scurrying across the land. George Clooney is hee-haw-hilarious at the head of a terrific cast.

Shower 86/100

A Chinese businessman returns to his humble roots to visit his father and mentally disabled brother in this touching and funny film about family and the value of community in the face of economic and social change. A compelling and believable storyline and excellent performances highlight this wonderful film.

What's Cooking? 86/100

Worlds and sensibilities collide in comedic fashion as children return home to the family camp for the Thanksgiving weekend in four ethnically diverse Los Angeles families.

Best in Show 86/100

Christopher Guest solidifies his reputation as a master of the mockumentary genre. He capably balances acerbic satire with believable and empathetic characterizations, while also pushing the comic envelop ever so gently outward. I award this hilarious film a blue ribbon

You Can Count on Me (2000) 86/100

Two siblings who were orphaned in childhood struggle to reconcile their different ways of coping in this honest and gently funny film about bonds of family that are tested, but not torn. Rookie director Ken Lonergan has struck a beautiful balance between realism and entertainment.

Stardom 85/100

This dark comedy shows what happens when an innocent young girl is thrust into the spotlight as a supermodel. The film shows how television helps create, build-up and eventually abandon its stars. Jessica Pare and Dan Ackroyd head the cast.

Billy Elliot 85/100

This crowd-pleaser is the most emotionally satisfying film of the year. Imbued with subtlety and intelligence, director Stephen Daldry’s feature film debut is enhanced by a series of remarkable performances, including newcomer Jamie Bell in the titular role and Gary Lewis, who shines as Billy’s confused and conflicted father.

Virgin Suicides, The 85/100

The five beautiful Lisbon sisters struggle through adolescence with a controlling mother and a curious neighbourhood, including four smitten boys who are fascinated by the girls and horrified by the events that follow a suicide attempt by the youngest of the Lisbons. Honest, with disarming wry humour.

Chicken Run 84/100

Ginger enlists the help of escaped ‘flying’ rooster Rocky to help her spring her fellow chickens to freedom before they become dinner pies. Claymation master Nick Parks has created a magical, wonderfully hilarious film (with a serious message at its heart) that the entire family can enjoy.
